About Us

Our mission is simple: to provide the best products and service to enhance the cooking experience of our clients, whether in your backyard or competing in the American Royal.
Growing up, Tim Scheer always liked to cook and barbeque the typical pork steaks and chicken. He started taking an interest in barbequing when he was in college due to his teammate and roommate who was from Memphis and constantly raving about “Memphis Barbecue”. While attending college in Cape Girardeau and as he traveled through the south to play basketball, he ate a lot of barbeque, especially ribs!
Tim started out on a Brinkman smoker; he then stepped it up to a pull-behind, diamond plate smoke pit that was delivered from Texas…and the madness began!
His first competition was a Backyard barbeque contest held at Bias Winery in 2007. After the fever of competition struck, he started researching barbeque online and found a great website called the BBQ Brethren. As more barbeque competitions started popping up closer to home, he decided to join the largest barbeque society in the country; the Kansas City BBQ Society. He then decided to try is hand with the professionals. His team started competing in the local contest at the Washington Barbeque and Blues Fest in the spring and the Hermann Barbeque & Brat Fest in the fall.
Fast forward to summer of 2011 and the Shake 'n Bake Barbeque Team was traveling almost every weekend all over the Midwest, from Kansas City to Chicago to compete. They competed in 18 contests in all. Over the past few years, Tim has racked up many ribbons and trophies including 1st place awards in each category of Chicken, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket.
He finished the 2011 season with a Reserve Grand Champion in Washington and then in June of 2011 finally got his 1st Grand Championship at the Alton, Illinois Cars, Blues, and BBQ Cook-off. This grand championship win included an automatic invitation to the largest barbeque contest in the World - the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City. This competition includes more than 100 teams in the invitational and 500 teams overall in the Open Field.
The Shake 'n Bake Team consists of Pitmaster Tim, his wife Terri, who makes up the turn-in boxes and participates in the extra side categories for fun, and of course the Shake 'n Bake girls (as they are affectionately known) Tatum and Taylor, who have become quite the tasters, as well as many other friends and family that help throughout the season. Tim and Terri have also both become KCBS Certified BBQ Judges.

After watching the movie Talladega Nights as well as being a NASCAR fan, Tim decided one evening that Shake 'n Bake would be a good name for their barbeque competition team. Over the past few years, the Scheer’s have met countless fantastic people in the barbeque world and have made many lifelong friends. Barbeque creates a real camaraderie with everyone always willing to lend a hand.
In the world of competition barbeque, many award winning cooks have perfected their own secret rubs and sauces and have bottled them to sell. While places like Kansas City and Memphis have multiple barbeque stores to purchase these special sauces, there aren't any in the St. Louis area so that is how the Gateway Barbeque Store came about. The Scheer’s decided to bring these products to the St. Louis area specializing in: sauces, rubs, grills, smokers, fuels, and accessories from all over the country.
On June 9th, 2012, Gateway BBQ Store and Scheer Landscape Co. held the new storefront’s Grand Opening Party on the Patio, which was a huge success! Thank you to all of our supporters!
Gateway BBQ Store continues to expand and enjoys offering competition style barbecue products at the store and online! So whether competing in the American Royal or in your own backyard, the Gateway BBQ Store has something for you to take your barbeque to the next level!
